Finding a provider whose registration matches your plan is straightforward. Finding one that is a genuine fit for your needs and circumstances takes a little more consideration. These are the factors worth examining.
Registered providers have been audited against the NDIS Practice Standards and are subject to ongoing oversight by the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission. Using a registered provider is required if your plan is agency-managed. If you self-manage or use a plan manager, you can use unregistered providers, but you take on more responsibility for verifying their credentials and quality.
Registration is not a guarantee of quality, and some excellent providers choose not to register because the compliance burden is significant for small operators. But for participants who are new to the NDIS, or who are receiving high-intensity supports, registered providers offer a clearer accountability structure.
NDIS registration is specific to support categories: a provider registered for Assistance with Daily Life is not automatically registered for Improved Living Arrangements or Specialist Disability Accommodation. Check that the provider is registered for the specific line items in your plan, not just that they appear on the register.
Providers often list their registration groups on their website. If it is not clear, ask them directly before signing a service agreement.
All workers providing certain NDIS supports, particularly those involving personal care, behaviour support, or working with children, must hold a valid NDIS Worker Screening Check. This is a national criminal history check with additional consideration of relevant findings. It is different from a standard police check.
Ask any provider whether their workers hold current NDIS screening checks for the support types you need. Registered providers are required to ensure this, but asking the question is still worthwhile.
Before engaging any provider, read the service agreement. The important elements: notice periods for cancelling or changing services (some providers require two to four weeks notice), cancellation fees (whether you are charged if you cancel a booking within 24 or 48 hours), what happens if your regular worker is unavailable, and the complaints and feedback process.
NDIS service agreements are regulated: providers cannot include terms that would give them an unfair advantage or limit your rights under the NDIS. If something in a service agreement looks unusual, the NDIS Commission website has guidance on what agreements can and cannot include.
For supports that involve regular contact with a worker, personal care, support coordination, therapy, the relationship matters as much as the registration. A provider whose workers speak your language, understand your cultural background, or have experience with your specific disability type will usually deliver better outcomes than a larger provider who treats everyone the same way.
Most providers will offer a trial session or initial meeting before a service agreement is signed. Use it.
