About education & scholarships in Australia

Community groups and activities are a core part of ageing well and of living a connected life with disability. This covers charities and causes, Men's Sheds, U3A, Probus, neighbourhood houses, senior centres, RSL and ex-services clubs, and sport and active-life groups.

Staying socially connected supports wellbeing for older people and for people with disability alike. These listings sit alongside care and support services so it is easy to find community life in the same place you find practical help.

Community listings come from official registers such as the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) for registered charities, and from public sources such as community groups' own directories and OpenStreetMap for clubs and groups.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a care directory list community groups?

Connection and activity are central to ageing well and to living a full life with disability, not an afterthought. Our Mate lists community groups alongside care and support services so the practical help and the social life can be found in one place.

Are these community groups only for older people?

No. Many groups welcome people of all ages and abilities, including people with disability, carers, and families. Our Mate is not a seniors-only directory. Where a group has a specific focus, that is noted on its listing.

How do I check that a charity is genuine?

Registered Australian charities appear on the public register maintained by the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC). Our Mate's charity listings are drawn from that register, and each charity's page links to its ACNC record so you can confirm its status at the official source.
