The main pathways, at a glance
An older person who needs help
For someone 65 or over, the doorway to government-subsidised aged care is My Aged Care on 1800 200 422. A short assessment decides what you are eligible for: entry-level help at home, an ongoing Support at Home budget, or residential aged care. A person under 65 with disability

Staying social and connected

Where do I start with aged care in Australia?
Start with My Aged Care on 1800 200 422, the government’s single entry point. After a short conversation about the person’s situation, they arrange an assessment and refer you to services. You do not need a GP referral to call.
Is it aged care or the NDIS?
As a rule of thumb, it comes down to age. The NDIS is generally for people under 65 with permanent, significant disability; the aged care system is the pathway for people 65 and over. If someone is already on the NDIS when they turn 65, they can choose to stay on it.
