Men's Sheds
We have around 100 members with over half attending regularly. Once a month we have guest speakers who cover a wide range of interests for our members, predominantly related to men’s health or topics that may assist our overall wellbeing.
Every Tuesday we have a sausage sizzle, hot chips (most), cakes, freshly brewed coffee and tea are available. All of this is provided for a covering fee of $5.00 per member. Visitors are welcome free of charge.
On opening days, our members attend to enjoy a range of activities including morning teas, playing cards, woodworking and metalworking in our workshop and on Wednesdays and Fridays we have table tennis available. Most of all, members gather to have a chat, tell jokes and enjoy the inclusiveness of the positive environment we provide.
Membership fees are $60 per year, with a $50 nomination fee for new members.
Membership includes access to our shed 3 days a week and two free of charge restaurant lunches at a local club. These lunches occur in July and December each year.
Our History:
Tuggeranong Men’s Shed (TMS) commenced via a series of breakfasts in 2007 at St Mary in the Valley Church. This modest beginning was fully supported by ACT Government’s, Communities@Work initiative.
We found a home at the Lake Tuggeranong Sea Scouts Hall in 2008. Early in 2009, we accepted the Lions Club of Canberra Inc. offer of a facility on the Kambah Pool Road where we could do woodwork, metalwork, toy making and undertake both community and personal projects.
The ACT Government granted funds for the construction of a purpose-built Shed attached to the Tuggeranong Archery Club’s Indoor Sporting Complex and in late 2013 we took occupancy of our new facility.
We became incorporated in May 2015 and have, through sound leadership and governance have established our Club as a viable, inclusive and productive community organisation.
Activities:
Our members gather for morning teas, to play cards, table tennis or just chat and relax.
We have a well-equipped workshop with drill presses, band saws, sanding machines, table saws, lathes and work benches; there is also a metal workshop and welding bay.
Note: Only financial members can use the equipment in our workshop, and that can only occur after a through safety induction and a competency accreditation in the use of respective tools or equipment.
Shed members make many things including wooden toys, repair furniture and work on projects for themselves, family and community groups.
To assist with the running costs for our Shed we participate in many community events such as school fetes, various Tuggeranong festivals and we are a regular BBQ stall operator at Bunning Tuggeranong. Our specialities are the legendary TMS Tornado Potato and our delicious sausage sizzles, both of which are prepared in accordance with relevant food safety and handling standards.
