Ballina U3A, formed in 1994 and renamed in 2025, is part of the worldwide University of the Third Age movement that began in France in 1973. The U3A concept defines retirement as the Third Age, following childhood and active working life, when people have opportunity to pursue dreams and ambitions previously impossible. The organisation operates as a supportive, inclusive, respectful and progressive community of learning.
Ballina U3A offers a wide range of classes and activities covering languages and discussion groups, exercise and wellbeing, crafts, games and leisure pursuits. The majority of members are retired or semi-retired, though the U3A has no age restrictions. All tutoring and course leadership roles are filled by volunteers drawn from membership, creating a truly community-driven learning organisation. Social events are an important part of the U3A experience.
The organisation is managed by a volunteer management committee elected from membership. Ballina U3A welcomes new members to join in learning, participate as course leaders and contribute to committee governance, ensuring the organisation remains responsive to community interests and needs.
