Clarence River U3A, established in 2001, is a not-for-profit volunteer organisation dedicated to lifelong learning and catering particularly to retired and semi-retired people aged 50 and over. The U3A concept originated in France in 1973 and has since spread worldwide, broadening from purely academic learning to include sharing of practical skills, knowledge and experience. The organisation creates a friendly, supportive learning environment where people can pursue intellectual and creative interests.
Members volunteer to run groups and activities across diverse interests spanning arts and crafts, literature and music, men's and women's sheds, bushwalking and camping. All volunteers give their time without payment, and learning focuses on knowledge-sharing and skill development rather than formal credentials or qualifications. Courses and activities involve small fees to cover venue hire and related costs.
Clarence River U3A operates as a member-led organisation where volunteers coordinate activities and contribute as facilitators. The U3A welcomes new members interested in participating in courses and activities, as well as prospective volunteers interested in leading groups or activities in their areas of expertise and passion.
