Orange U3A operates as a self-help education organisation for retired or semi-retired men and women, with no educational standards for joining. The organisation welcomes both highly trained university graduates and those who left school early, recognising that learning comes from life experience rather than formal qualifications. All volunteers including course leaders and office bearers work without payment.
The U3A offers two to three courses every weekday, all held during daytime hours, with most classes in the central business district at Orange Senior Village Hub. Four terms per year align with school holidays, though some classes continue during breaks. Several courses involve outdoor excursions held throughout the year. Members can attend as few or as many courses as desired for a single annual subscription.
Course leaders span diverse backgrounds and interests. The organisation's philosophy emphasises learning for personal satisfaction rather than achievement, with no examinations. This accessible, volunteer-driven approach keeps costs minimal while offering substantial breadth of learning opportunities.
